Gilbert dazzles in Aggie debut to lead Texas A&M over Arkansas Pine-Bluff 77-54

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Year five of the Joni Taylor era tipped off with a historic performance Monday night as Texas A&M pulled away for a 77-54 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff inside Reed Arena.

LSU transfer Kailyn Gilbert had a career-best 30 points despite starting the game 1-of-5 in the first quarter.

“It was actually a point in time where I looked at Joni, and I was like, I’m struggling,” Gilbert said. “This is my first game back in a year. I don’t know what to do. And she was like, you’re okay. Just keep playing your game. And then I think towards the end, everything started coming together a little bit more.”

Why did the Aggies win?

Texas A&M clamped down defensively and dominated the interior, turning stops directly into transition points while controlling the glass from the opening tip. After UAPB cut the deficit to four in the third quarter behind Indiya Bowen’s team-high 18 points, the Maroon & White took complete control in the final period.

The Aggies shot 58.8% (10-of-17) from the floor in the fourth quarter and tightened up their defense down the stretch, closing the contest on a 19-4 run over the final 6:35 — punctuated by a game-ending 11-0 surge.

Who stood out?

LSU transfer Kailyn Gilbert made an unforgettable splash in her Aggie debut, pouring in a career-high 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting (including 5-of-7 from 3-point range) while grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out six assists. The performance marked the most points scored in an Aggie debut since the turn of the century and Gilbert’s fifth career double-double.

“She was really, really good tonight, but she’s got more in her in all aspects of the game,” A&M head coach Joni Taylor said. “And I know that sounds really picky because when you look at her stats... I mean, she had 11 rebounds, six assists, and so it’s like, come on, Joni. But she’s got more.”

Miyah Verse also impressed in her Maroon & White debut, scoring 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with six rebounds and a breakaway steal, while Emerald Parker added 10 points, eight boards, and three blocks. Freshman Rieyan DeSouze provided the spark early, scoring the team’s first basket of the season on a corner three.

What was a key stat?

50-27 rebounding margin.

Texas A&M completely overwhelmed the Lady Lions on the boards, holding a 50-27 overall advantage. The Aggies’ defensive positioning was so stifling early that they did not surrender a single offensive rebound to UAPB through the first 19:07 of play, building a 12-4 offensive rebounding edge by halftime.

What’s next?

Texas A&M (1-0) continues its season-opening six-game homestand on Thursday, Nov. 5, hosting Louisiana at Reed Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
